Coalport Saucer, c.1880 and Gold Reflect Teacup
Designed for Coalport by Thomas Blocksidge circa 1880, this Japanese Grove design helped cement the factory as one of the leading potters of the 19th and 20th centuries. Saucers in the ‘Japonism’ style became immensely popular in the 1870s as trade relations with Japan were restored, leading to an influx of oriental patterns flooding the Western market. Blocksidge was one of a handful of designers who helped bring Coalport back from the brink after a period of strife, creating similarly striking designs that spoke to the new fashion of the day.
Antique British porcelain is never perfect. During the 1800s, kilns were fired on coal resulting in some firing specks at times, whilst makers were known for their experimentation that sometimes resulted in technically imperfect results. As a result, each saucer is truly unique and a small piece of history that has survived centuries to find its new home with you.
